It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times. Rage Impressions.

As October 4th dawned I woke up like it was Christmas. I went to put on a pot of coffee, booted up my computer, and installed the newest Id Software release. The first proper Id release since Doom 3, thinking of this as an event in my household was an understatement. Now when we got our first computers back in the late 80's we had Sierra Online games, we had some Lucasfilm software games, Hell I'm pretty sure we had some Sid Meier games also. But nothing could compare to the early 90's and our brand new 386 pcs powering Wolfenstein 3D.

So fast, so bloody, so simple. My gaming life changed from that moment on. Wolf3D begot Doom. Doom begot Quake. Then nothing, technology marched forward but Id Software games lost their luster in the face of competition. Rage is a return to form for the venerable developer, and for the most part they succeeded. But the heart and soul that made those original Id games awesome is buried under a tech that sounds awesome on paper, looks lovely for the most part, but already seems dated with the heavy hitters (Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2 engine) coming out.

But with all that said, the game is a blast to play, the wing sticks, the ability to combine and create stuff, the driving have all been done by other games but Id makes them their own. Truely a lovely game.
