Comic Book Games Return to Basics and X-men Origins: Wolverine Leads the Way

|

Another year, another Marvel Comics movie. X-men Origins: Wolverine was an easy choice for Fox to make. Kids love their Weapon X and to be honest, so do I. It is a simple pleasure to watch an action movie and really not worry about a lousy script, throw away love story, plot holes and other stuff film critics get up tight about. I went into this movie theater knowing that Wolverine was not going to go the direction of The Dark Knight and I couldn't have it any other way. It's all about the action, and nothing but the action.

So with that in mind, I took a look at the game based on the movie, based on a comic book character and to my surprise it was not the throw away shovelware most movie tie-in games and especially comic book movie tie-in games have been known for. X-men Origins: Wolverine (Uncaged Edition) is an M rated game for PS3,XB360,and PC and is developed by Raven Software has a lot going for it. Beautiful character graphics and animation, easy controls, and voice overs featuring the actors from the movie. One thing that can not be said is that Wolverine is lacking in production values.

But I'm sure to certain people, this game wont give them the satisfaction they truly crave by just loosely following the movie. The story in the game is all over the place, and is only understandable after watching the movie. I look at it this way, I did not go see X-men Origins expecting Citizen Kane. And I am not playing this game expecting Bioshock. Like the movie, the game is all about the action, nothing but the action. How does a game make up for a short story that is all over the place. With extreme blood and gore. In fact this is one of the most violent super hero games I have ever played (with a notable execption for 2005's The Punisher), with heads, arms, legs being ripped from enemy bodies. Likewise when you take damage your body shows real time damage and wounds going so deep you can see the inner workings of ol' Weapon X himself. It is entertaining to watch and play and keeps you satisfied for the roughly 8 hours it takes to complete.

In conclusion, I think this is a great movie tie-in that is well polished and enjoyable. Anyone who liked the movie will find something to love with this title. But if you didn't care for the movie I implore you to try the demo and give it a shot because it is a decent action game too. Either way times are a changin' with future releases getting better and better. Lets face it, with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Champions Online the future is looking up for the world comic book/superhero games with something for everybody.
